A 'Development' Tragedy–Pakistan#10
I decided today. Not to cooperate.
Not with malice. Not with drama. Just: no. I will not pretend the structure makes sense. I will not contort myself to fit the impossibility. I will not produce the deliverable that covers up the logic of the situation.
The education. Not the output.
The education is: this model is broken. And I will show the breaking rather than hide it.
I drafted the ToR. They used them unchanged. Now the incongruence is structural, baked in, contractual. More work will shift to Switzerland. Away from the sites I cannot see. Away from the relationships I cannot build in twenty days.
Fine. Then the work will show what twenty days from Switzerland can show: almost nothing that matters.
This is not failure. This is honesty.
They had ordered me to travel back to Switzerland. I hesitated, but then called my mother to help me book another plane ticket.
Our Own World
I am with R.Z. again. We walk through the garden.
"When we are together, we have our own world." he says.
Yes. The small world of two people paying attention. The world that forms between genuine meeting.
"You have no plans, but the plans that come without plan are the best plans."
I laugh. I have been trying so hard to plan. To manage. To deliver.
How can we build structures of care? This is the question underneath everything. Not: how do we deliver? Not: how do we manage complexity? But: how do we build structures that care for what wants to live?
Bauhinia variegata. The orchid tree. R.Z. points to it. Two leaves fused at the base, splitting into lobes. The botanical name means "two brothers" - after the Bauhin brothers, botanists who worked together.
Even the taxonomy remembers relationship. Even the naming system encodes collaboration.
What does it mean to care for the interest of nature - the ecology of ideas, of relationships, of what complexity requires to be seen?
The learning may be more important than the deliverable.
The breaking may be more honest than the fixing.
The garden teaches: roots before plans. Relationship before output. Care before control.
